Results of Russia

At the end of last year, the IOC announced the suspension of participation in the Olympics, most Russian athletes who were suspected of using illegal drugs. And those who were still allowed to compete were banned from performing under the flag of Russia, instead they were offered to use a neutral banner.

But even despite the IOC’s unjustified ban on participating in competitions for many Russian athletes, the national team still managed to earn 17 medals and become the thirteenth in the team event.

Russian winners

Alina Zagitova, a young figure skater and hockey team, brought gold to the Russians.

Silver medals for Russia were won by: Evgenia Medvedeva (figure skater), Nikita Trigubov (skeleton), Alexander Bolshunov (skiing), team of figure skaters, men's teams of skiers (relay race and sprint).

The bronze medalists were: Natalya Voronina and Semyon Elistratov (speed skating), Alexander Bolshunov together with Denis Spitsov, Andrey Larkov, as well as Yulia Belorukova (skiing), Sergey Ridzik and Ilya Burov (freestyle) and the women's ski team.

Skier wins

Almost 50% of all medals that the Russian team earned, namely 17, were brought to the team by skiers. First, Denis Spitsov took third place in the free style race, later the second and third results were shown by Bolshunov and Larkov. In addition, Bolshunov has bronze for participating in an individual sprint. Together with Larkov, they took silver in the sprint and relay race, in which Chervotkin still took part. As for women skiers, the third in the individual sprint was Yulia Belorukova and the women's team consisting of Belorukova, Nepryaeva, Nechaevskaya and Sedova.

Hockey gold

From the very beginning of the competition, Russian hockey players have been one of the favorites. And despite the unsuccessful start, when they lost to the Slovakia national team (2: 3), they confidently beat the US national team (4: 0), Slovenia (8: 2), Norway (6: 1) and the Czechs they faced in the semifinals (3: 0).

For the Russian team, this was a huge achievement, since after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the maximum that they managed to achieve was 2nd place at the games in Nagano 20 years ago. They managed to win gold in 1992 at the games in Albertville, but then the Russians were in the team of the former Soviet republics.

During the award ceremony, Russian hockey players did not restrain their emotions and sang the Russian anthem, which was also banned.

Doping scandal

Already during the games, several Olympians, including 2 Russians, were suspended from participating in the competition due to the discovery of traces of doping in their bodies. Among them was Alexander Krushelnitsky, who literally on the eve of this won (3rd place) in curling competitions. The curlist himself denies taking any illegal drugs, but he did not fight for justice either.

The results belonging to Nadezhda Sergeeva, who participated in the bobsleigh competitions, were also canceled due to the fact that the prohibited drug, namely trimethazine, appeared in her image of analysis. Her result was 12th place.

The best moments of the Olympics

During the 2018 Olympic Games, athletes were able to set more than one sports record:

  1. Nathan Chen, a skater from the United States, was able to flawlessly perform 6 quadruple jumps at once, performing his free program, which had never happened before in the history of figure skating. However, during the short program, he made some gross errors, so he did not get medals.

  1. Sven Kramer from the Netherlands in the 5000-meter race among skaters became the first and so far the only athlete to win the race three times at this distance. However, this is not the most interesting thing in speed skating - Ted-Jan Blumen, a Canadian athlete and Sverre Pedersen from Norway finished at the same time. In order to determine which of them will become the second, and which of the third had to resort to a photo finish, where the judges were able to determine that the Canadian managed to do this earlier by 0.002 seconds.

  1. Representatives of the team from Norway claimed at this Olympics awards in almost every sport. As a result, they have 39 different medals.

  1. An athlete from the Czech Republic, Esther Ledecki, took part immediately in skiing and snowboarding competitions, which no one had done before.

The next time the Winter Olympics will be held in Beijing in 2022.
