Abkhazia - bright sun, gentle sea, amazing landscapes. The most famous resort of this region, New Athos, in Soviet times was available only to the elite. Anyone can come here today. Upon arrival in this resort town as if you get into a fairy tale.

How to get there

The resort is best reached through Sochi, where there is an international airport. By plane, you can fly to Adler, from where the train Adler-Sukhum, which is easy to get to the resort town. Border controls take place right in the car. A ticket costs from 150 rubles.

The Moscow-Sukhum train is on the way 45 hours. You need to be careful, because the train stops at New Athos station for only 1 minute.

From Moscow to Sochi or Krasnodar can be reached by bus, and from there - to Sukhum. In total it is necessary to overcome almost 1,800 km. In time it will take about three and a half days.

You can get to New Athos by car. You need to go to Dzhubga on the M4 highway. After crossing the border, you must follow the M27.

From May to September to Gagra from Sochi there is an opportunity to sail by boat, and then to the resort by public transport. Ticket price - 500 rubles, for children free of charge. The journey takes about 1.5 hours.

Holidays by the sea in New Athos

In the central part of the resort there are small pebble beaches. In the eastern part there are sandy ones. The bottom at the entrance to the water is flat, and the descent is comfortable. Compared to other resorts in Abkhazia, there are relatively few people on the beaches of New Athos.

All beaches are municipal, so entry is free. The sea is very clean. All the necessary equipment for a beach holiday - umbrellas, deck chairs are offered for rent only on the territory of boarding houses and sanatoriums. There are also showers, which is not on other beaches. Dressing booths are installed everywhere.

You can settle in New Athos in hotels or recreation centers built in Soviet times, in the private sector or in newly built boarding houses. In winter, some hotels do not work. Against the backdrop of international resorts, the hotels of New Athos do not look so solid, but their level is constantly growing, and Abkhazian hospitality and cordiality smooths out all everyday irregularities.

Housing prices fluctuate depending on the season of stay at the resort and on the distance to the sea. A double room in a boarding house, which is located 700 meters from the sea, costs 2,200 rubles / day in January, 6,100 rubles in July, and 5,300 rubles in August.

A bed in the private sector will cost from 600 rubles per person. A shower and a bathroom will be on the floor.

One-room apartment can be rented in the season for 2 000-2 500 rubles per day.

Prices for holidays in New Athos: meals

Residents of Abkhazia are known for their longevity. Sanitary natural conditions, crystal air and proper nutrition are the reasons for this factor. The hospitable Caucasus is also famous for its feasts.

Local residents observe moderation in everything and do not often eat meat, unlike other residents of the Caucasus. They prefer sour-milk dishes and vegetables more.

You can save money by cooking yourself.Prices are almost the same as in Russia. Local fruits are cheaper. Buying products in the market you can bargain. It is sometimes even interesting and fun. Near the station is the Central Market, which is open from 6:00 to 20:00. Another market is located near the cave, but it is no longer a grocery, but a souvenir one.

The cost of lunch in an ordinary cafe will cost from 450 to 600 rubles per person. Approximately the same cost will come out in an institution offering national cuisine. Barbecue costs from 180 rubles per serving of 100 grams, soups - from 120 rubles, the price of salads starts from 60 rubles.

Homemade wine can be purchased for 220 rubles / 1.5 liters, bottle wines - from 200 rubles, chacha - from 210 rubles / 0.5 liters.

Attractions and entertainment

The rich subtropical vegetation, landscapes of New Athos, hilly terrain for a long time remain in the memory of vacationers and guests of this resort. Thickets of olive, tangerine, orange and lemon trees will not leave anyone indifferent. The aroma of citruses and cypresses makes you forget about the problems and stresses of everyday life. The coastal zone is rich in green spaces - eucalyptus trees, palm trees, laurels, magnolias.

There are a lot of interesting places in the resort village. New Athos Monastery is one of the most interesting. It was built by monks for 12 years, starting in 1875. After many years of hard work, in 1896 the monastery was built. Alexander III in 1888 even took part in its construction. For the highest tower, he presented chimes. A particle of the Tree of the Life-giving Cross of the Lord is the main shrine of this place. At this monastery there were foundry, shoe, watch, sewing, bookbinding, creamery, brick and candle factories. In 1924, it was completely closed, and only after 70 years the revival of the shrine began.

Not far from the monastery is a cave in which Kananit Simon prayed. It is recognized as a miracle of Abkhazia. And in its beauty and size it is not inferior to the famous caves of the world. Forgetting a walk through its 9 halls and getting such an unforgettable experience is no longer possible anywhere else.

Divers at the resort will be no less interesting. In these places under the water you can see the ruins of the ancient city of Anacopia.

Advantages and disadvantages of rest

Modern man is used to beach joys, hype, relaxing in bars, clubs. There are few such entertainments in the resort town. For some, this may seem like a flaw, but it more than overlaps with the natural, spiritual and historical wonders of New Athos.
